A woman has blamed an apocalyptic alien cult for making her shoot her boyfriend dead at their home in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania.
Barbara Rogers, 42, claims members of the Sherry Shriner cult turned against her and her late partner Stephen Mineo.
Rogers said her boyfriend was so distraught by the cult, which expresses a belief in extraterrestrials and an impending apocalypse, that he asked her to shoot him at their home in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, in July 2017.
She said that she spent her last night with her late lover out at a local bar and afterward went into the woods behind their house to shoot him with his .45-caliber handgun.
She told jurors that Mineo then put the gun to his own head, wrapped her hands around it and told her to pull the trigger on him, reported WNEP.
During a 911 call obtained by WNEP she yelled: “My boyfriend had a gun. He told me to hold it here and press the trigger. Oh my God, he’s dead!”
Despite her claims, prosecutors believe Rogers shot her boyfriend on purpose.
In court, she pleaded not guilty to third-degree murder before the trial began, which would have seen her jailed for 10 to 15 years, reported Metro.
Police lieutenant Steven Williams told WBRE in 2017: “[Rogers] identified that the deceased was having online issues with a cult and he wanted to be killed and requested she do it.”
According to the Herald Sun, cult leader Sherry Shriner said the group tried to warn Mineo that Rogers “was dangerous and he was just blinded by her.”
She said: “Cult members were convinced Rogers was a witch or a reptile who wanted to kill Mineo.”
The Pocono Record reported Rogers called 911 about 20 minutes after the shooting.
