What was the reaction to Junko Furuta’s torture and murder and the sentencing of the perpetrators in Japan around the time it happened?

I knew about this case already but I’ve recently become interested in it and it makes me sad about what she had to go through over the 44 days she was being tortured and raped. I am shocked at how lenient the sentencing was of the perpetrators (one of them got twenty years and the others got eight) and I understand that they were juveniles but the crime they committed was so horrific that shouldn’t have mattered. My question is what was Japan’s reaction to the crime/sentencing.

I’m not sure if this is the right sub to post this on but tell me if it isn’t.
